Spotify Co-Founder Daniel Ek: 'I'm Not Going to Sell'

Stockholm, Sweden – In a bold declaration, Daniel Ek, co-founder and CEO of music streaming giant Spotify, announced his unwavering commitment to building a European “super company,” quashing rumors of a potential sale or acquisition.

Ek’s statement comes amidst growing speculation about the future of Spotify, the world’s leading music streaming service by paid subscriber base. While some industry analysts predicted a public listing or a takeover by a larger tech firm, Ek put those rumors to rest during the Brilliant Minds symposium in Stockholm.

“My selfish ambition with Spotify is just trying to show…that we can create one of those super companies here in Europe,” Ek told journalists. When asked directly if this meant he wouldn’t sell the company, he responded with a definitive “I’m not going to sell, no.”

Ek’s vision aligns with a growing sentiment within the European tech community to cultivate homegrown tech giants that can compete with Silicon Valley powerhouses. Historically, many European startups have been acquired by larger American competitors, but Ek believes that Europe is now equipped with the resources and expertise to nurture its own successful ventures.

“For the first time now there’s an ecosystem around it with capital and experience that can actually help guide entrepreneurs,” he said. “The number one advice I tell everyone is ‘don’t sell’ because that’s the biggest problem we have. All these things could grow gigantic if you just kept the course and kept doing what you’re doing.”

Despite Ek’s ambitious vision, Spotify faces significant challenges. The company reported an operating loss of 184.5 million euros in the previous year, and it operates in a highly competitive market against formidable rivals like Apple Music, Google Music, and YouTube.

Nevertheless, Ek’s unwavering commitment to Spotify’s future as an independent European tech giant sends a powerful message to both the industry and investors. Whether Spotify can achieve “super company” status remains to be seen, but Ek’s determination to defy the odds is undeniable.
